The pensiune
A family run guesthouse, the most common form of accommodation outside the big cities.
A pensiune is usually a house with a handful of rooms, run by the family who live in it. Breakfast is normally included and often made from what the household produces. Standards vary widely from one to the next, which is the honest thing to say about them, and the rating you see on a booking site tells you more about the plumbing than about the welcome.
A restored Saxon house
In the villages of southern Transylvania, old merchant and farm houses have been brought back into use.
These are the tall, thick walled houses that face the street in the Saxon villages around Sighisoara and Viscri. Restoration has been going on for years, some of it careful and some of it not. When it is done well you get lime plaster, tiled stoves and small windows, which means cool rooms in summer and a quiet that is hard to find elsewhere.
The mountain cabana
Simple lodges in the Carpathians, some reachable by road, some only on foot.
A cabana can mean anything from a hotel with a car park to a bunk room at the end of a four hour walk. The ones high in the mountains are working shelters first and accommodation second, so hot water and electricity are not a given. In winter the access road may be the deciding factor rather than the building itself.
City hotels and apartments
Bucharest, Cluj Napoca, Timisoara, Brasov and Sibiu all have the full range.
The centres are compact, so the difference between a central address and one a few streets out is often ten minutes of walking rather than a different experience. Older buildings in Bucharest can be beautiful and noisy at the same time, since the windows face streets that stay busy late.
