The Transfagarasan road
A mountain road across the Fagaras range, built in the 1970s, climbing past Balea Lake at more than two thousand metres.
The road is closed by snow for much of the year and the open season is short, usually the height of summer into early autumn. Opening and closing are decided by the road authority according to conditions, not by a fixed calendar, so the dates move from year to year. Anyone planning around it should check the current status before travelling rather than trusting a date found online.
Castles and the stories around them
Peles above Sinaia and Bran near Brasov are the two most visited, and they are very different buildings.
Peles was built in the late nineteenth century as a royal residence and reads as a palace. Bran is older, sits on a rock above the pass, and is bound up in popular culture with Dracula, although the historical link to Vlad III is thin and the castle itself makes no strong claim to it. Both are museums today, with their own opening hours and ticketing, which we do not sell or handle.
Village traditions
Wooden churches in Maramures, fortified Saxon churches in Transylvania, painted monasteries in Bucovina.
Several of these are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, which is a useful signal that they are protected and documented, not that they are set up for large numbers of visitors. Many are working churches in small communities. Visiting them is a quiet activity that rewards slow travel and a car, and the roads between them are the point as much as the buildings.
Wine country
Romania has one of the larger vineyard areas in Europe, with grape varieties that are grown almost nowhere else.
Dealu Mare, Recas, Cotnari and Murfatlar are among the regions you will see named on a label. The native varieties are the reason to pay attention, Feteasca Neagra and Feteasca Alba among the reds and whites, and Tamaioasa Romaneasca among the aromatic wines. Cellar visits are usually arranged directly with the producer.
